Mickey Rourke had a crazy weekend. Not only was he spotted “tongue wrestling” with the actress who played his daughter in The Wrestler — 21-year-old Evan Rachel Wood — but now he’s signed to fight Chris Jerricho at WWE’s Wrestlemania extravaganza. From the AP:
Listen up wrestlin’ fans: actor Mickey Rourke says he’s ready to rumble with WWE superstar Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania 25 in Reliant Stadium on April 5.
Rourke portrays professional wrestler Randy the Ram in the acclaimed movie “The Wrestler.”
He’s signed to wrestle Jericho, for real.
He made a surprise announcement Sunday night on the red carpet before the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.
He said he was pleased by the acceptance of the movie by all the WWE wrestlers — except Jericho.
Then Rourke said he was going to toss Jericho “around the ring like tossed salad.”
I haven’t watched a wrestling PPV since back when Hulk fought the Rock, but I’d tune in to see this. So, if the WWE is looking to lure back some of its old fans, this might do the trick, even if it’s only for one night.
As for Rourke, how Andy Kaufmanesque. My only thing is could this cost him an Oscar? If so, that’s pretty stupid. The guy is just having a good time with his comeback, and trying to make up for lost time. By the way, if you haven’t seen The Wrestler, then get your ass to the theater — now!
If this happens, I think it’s going to be, as Ah-nold would say, fantastic. Even though I haven’t watched wrastlin’ for a long time, I always thought Jerricho was a great entertainer.
