While Joe Smith didn’t add much to the Lakers this season he was a big part of addition by subtraction. Smith came over in the much celebrated trade of Sasha Vujacic to the Nets. Mitch Kupchak was able to unload a contract for which he saw no return on. But that is an entirely different subject.

Smith was practically invisible as a Laker. The former number one pick in the ’95 draft appeared in just 12 games for Los Angeles. Hoping to add some help to the frontline Kupchak was more than happy to give away Sasha’s contract for a veteran big. Of course the Lake Show had to part with a first round pick in order to sweeten the deal.

Overall there wasn’t much to say about Smith’s performance. He is a respected player in the league and at 35 he still has some left in the tank if another team so chooses to secure his services. It is highly doubtful the Lakers will extend an offer to Smith but given the current labor climate you never know what might happen.
