Mike D'Antoni Thinks Lakers Can Be Better Sans Howard

Last season was a disaster; every fan knows that, including Mike D’Antoni. When asked if the Lakers can be better than last season, D’Antoni had a few things to say.

“I don’t see why not. I think we can be better because I don’t think we reached our potential last year. Our lack of defense came mostly from lack of energy from guys that didn’t feel right in their place on the team. Defense is energy, concentration and the desire to do it.

“If something is sapping that energy — distractions, injuries, not feeling good about the team — then you’re not going to put your heart and soul into it and it comes out on the defensive end. They just didn’t feel each other.”

Mike D’Antoni has a point in that the Lakers didn’t reach their potential last season for certain reasons, but that doesn’t mean this team can be better. Without Howard, the Lakers are going to have one of the worst defenses in the league. Yes, the Lakers should have better chemistry this season, but Kobe and Nash are both going to be battling injuries, and Gasol and Nash could be on minutes restrictions. It’s going to be really hard for this current team to win more than 45 games.

I 100% agree with MDA. Mike Brown had the Lakers playing much better defense with an old Derek Fisher. Offensive strategy affects the defensive ceiling of an NBA team. The Showtime Lakers were considered a decent defensive team when it counted (due to good team chemistry) but they gave up 109 points a game during those championship runs.

The thing that made Showtime so great was the chemistry and sharing of the ball offensively. Assist, assist, assist! If this Lakers roster can get the ego’s in check and start playing for each other, MDA could duplicate that synergy.

Rebounding is my only concern. D’Antoni needs to relent a bit on the stretch four with Jordan Hill. Hill could be our Rambis/AC Green IMO.
