There’s a scene in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Ted breaks up with a girl, or maybe Barney does. Anyway, a letter is written. The letter serves a valuable purpose. It contains all the bad qualities of the ex: the way she bit her nails, the way she seemed to treat listening as one would the waiting room at the dentist’s before her chance to speak. The letter is written so that, in the darkest day, it can be dredged up and read – a reminder of the worst times when the bad times come and you’re tempted to return to the “good old days”.
And here we are, in the worst times. The dreaded offseason. The dog-days of August. Of September. Of July and some of June. The worst.
So just remember this time when you see the losses pile up. Remember the bad qualities. When Kobe isn’t back and Nash’s back hurts and everyone thinks Pau is “soft”, just remember that, here and now, there isn’t any basketball whatsoever. No losses. No wins. No Kobe. No Pau. No Phil Jackson. No D’Antoni. Nothing.
This is the worst of times for all of us. Nothing for the writers’. Nothing for the players’. Nor t
he commentators’ nor the fans’.
Write yourself a letter Laker fans. Remember how life can be without a Laker game on tv at any time.
Whether the Lakers are good or bad; anything is better than this.
Enjoy the season guys and go Lakers – no matter what!
