UPDATE 2:

The Lakers have now confirmed the news via Twitter.

UPDATE 1:

Now confirmed by Mike Bresnahan of the LA Times, then Sam Amick of USA Today. It seems like all but official that Nash’s career is over.

With his time in LA already marred with injuries and “what-ifs”, Lakers guard Steve Nash reportedly has been ruled out for the entire 2014-15 season, likely ending his career, according to Bleacher Report’s Kevin Ding.

"Nash is expected to be ruled out for the 2014-15 NBA season because of recurring nerve damage in his back, according to league sources.Nash, 40, had said he expects this 19th NBA season to be his final one. But he has not announced his retirement. Nash has not stated an intention of playing for a team away from Los Angeles and his children, saying in March that he would be done if the Lakers used their stretch provision to cut him for salary-cap savings: “That would be it. I’ll either be back here or I’ll be done.”"

While fans grew frustrated with Nash, this is certainly a depressing end to a great career, if true.

Over two season in LA, Nash managed to play less than a full season of games. A broken bone in his first game in purple and gold against the Trailblazers derailed his career, with the leg issue eventually leading to the nerve damage in his back, which appears to have ended his career.

Depending on the injury, the Lakers could recoup the salary owed to Nash. If Nash plays less than 10 games in a season and is forced to retire due to injury, his salary could come off the books entirely.

If this is the end, we certainly hope for the best for Nash.
