Lakers Granted Harship Waiver To Add 16th Player To Roster

UPDATED:

After the Lakers game on Sunday night, it was revealed that the Lakers had actually been granted to hardship waiver last week and failed to use it during the two-day period.

This would mean the rumors of Earl Clark signing with the team were probably centered around that two-day window. That also means it’s less likely the Lakers make a move.

The Lakers have finally been granted a hardship waiver, which allows them to add a 16th player to the roster in light of Xavier Henry’s season-ending Achilles injury.

With the Lakers rumored to be involved with several free agents, it’s unclear if the team was waiting for this moment before signing one. Most notably, the team neared the completion of a deal with former Laker Earl Clark, but the talk on a deal as went silent in the recent days.

If the Lakers do add a player, the player would only be able to stay on the team until Ryan Kelly returns without making a subsequent roster move to clear space. The name actually rumored to be on the way out is Henry himself, although that is simply a rumor and unofficial.

If the Lakers look to cut a non-injured player, Ronnie Price seems like the all-around most likely, while waiving Wesley Johnson would be the likely positional sacrifice.

However, as cruel as it might sound, waiving Henry seems like the most likely option. Keeping three players on the roster with season-ending injuries is simply not a smart move, and Henry is the most expendable of them.
