The current incarnation of Kobe Bryant should not be the Bryant that Los Angeles Laker fans should remember. The low percentage, pop-a-shot Bryant has had some forgettable games this year, but Laker fans should all remember the cutthroat assassin that brought Los Angeles five championships and electrified the Laker faithful for almost two decades.

Kobe Bryant, through unbelievable talent and unequaled determination, passed his idol, Michael Jordan, on the NBA career scoring list against the Minnesota Timberwolves last Friday. Unless you were incapacitated or just woke up from a cryogenically frozen slumber, you might have seen that broadcasted on what seemed like 918,273 news outlets.

The reaction from fans and opposing teams alike was congratulatory and had an air of reverence. People weren’t thinking of the Kobe Bryant who currently has a 38.2 field goal percentage or is nearing the end of his career. They are thinking of the precocious gunner who struck fear in opposing teams with his grit and never ending pursuit to be the greatest player ever.
