Los Angeles Lakers: Top Five Guards All-Time
In seasons like this, sometimes it is fun to look back at the times when the Lakers actually had great players. The Lakers franchise is home to some of the greatest big men of all time, from George Mikan, all the way to Shaquille O’Neal. But let’s not forget some of the guards that have helped bring 16 championships to LA over the last 70 years.
The biggest question remains, who gets the number one spot? Kobe Bryant or Magic Johnson?
Honorable Mentions:
Michael Cooper: Coop was the perfect compliment to a “Showtime” team loaded with talent, as he established himself early into his career as one of the best perimeter defenders in the game. Cooper’s five NBA All-Defensive team honors speak for themselves, as well as his 1987 Defensive Player of the Year honor. Cooper played his whole NBA career for the Lakers, from 1978-1991. Most importantly, Cooper was a part of all five Lakers titles in the Showtime era.

Derek Fisher: Fisher entered the league in the same year as Kobe Bryant, and the two formed a bond that very few players obtain for their whole career. Fisher made his living in the NBA by being the toughest guy on the floor, and making countless big time shots when the Lakers needed it most. Fisher played his first nine years for the Lakers, winning three straight titles, and came back three years later to win another two championships with Bryant.
Norm Nixon: Nixon spent his first seven years of his career with the Lakers, and played a large role in the 1980, and 1982 NBA finals. Nixon led the 1982 Lakers team in scoring throughout the playoffs with 20.4 points per game, and averaged 16.4 points as a Laker. Nixon was one of the three Lakers to make the 1982 all star team (Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).
