Los Angeles Lakers: Nick Young Sprains Ankle

The injury report continues to grow for the Los Angeles Lakers. According to Mark Medina, Lakers guard Nick Young sprained his ankle today at practice. This is potentially a huge loss for the Lakers who have already lost Julius Randle, Steve Nash, and Kobe Bryant (probably) for the remainder of the season.

Though the extent of the injury is currently unknown, Young was going to be leaned upon to carry a majority of the scoring load with Kobe Bryant out with a torn rotator cuff; a role he is well versed in after carrying the Los Angeles Lakers last season after Bryant was ruled out for the year after breaking his lateral tibial plateau. Now, with this ankle injury, Young will be limited at best and out for a number of games at worst.

The usually brash Young was averaging 14.5 points in his last six games, but he was struggling with his confidence and shooting the ball, only converting on 39.7 percent of his attempts. In the Lakers’ last game against the Rockets, head coach Byron Scott kept Nick Young on the bench for the entirety of the second half believing that Young’s body language indicated that he did not want to play.

Although he was struggling from the field, Young’s presence and ability to make shots from all over the court made him a threat for a Lakers team who lack players that can create shots for themselves and others.  If Young misses any games due to the injury, the Los Angeles Lakers will be severely undermanned offensively.

Even if Young does not miss any games due to the injury, Jordan Clarkson and Jeremy Lin should be slated to receive more minutes with Young now limited due to the ankle injury.
