Open Letter to Lamar Odom

Lamar Odom’s downfall has taken place in front of the world. The tragedy is all over the news and brings tears to fans’ and players’ eyes alike. The world has so much it wants to say to you Lamar.

Lamar,

It’s tough to see you like this.

When we reflect on your career, it’s amazing that it is not for the big dunks, or key shots that we remember you but rather for your contagious smile. A big teddy bear with a passion for the game of basketball. A truly genuine human being.

You have suffered so many losses. Losses which many of us will never know.

First your mom, then grandparents, baby boy and best friends. That pain must be unbearable.

It was nice to see you thoroughly enjoy your time with Khloe Kardashian, but suffering still found a way to get in between you. But maybe the cameras did too. You made peace with your father, so no loose ends there.

Your kids love you, but there is nothing much they could’ve done. You were on a downward spiral and even magic couldn’t stop the spinning.

The people that love you feel helpless. We pray you’ve found the bottom so you can rise to the top once more.

We will never forget your 2010-11 NBA Sixth Man of the Year speech. It was so emotional. Yes, Lamar you made it!

You’re a two-time NBA champion, but more importantly a better human being and no one can take that away from you.

Everyone on your Lakers team loves you and we know you love them too. They’re an extension of your family. You reminded us of that during your acceptance speech. You were filled with so much real emotion, another reason fans continue to flock to you.

Kobe Bryant rushed to your side. He even left the Lakers preseason game against the Sacramento Kings to meet you at the hospital and be with you.

Magic Johnson is devastated. He wanted the world to know what you are really all about. Things we never knew.

It’s saddening that it has taken such a tragic situation for more stories of your generosity and kindness to surface, but it makes us love you all the more.

Your former teammate Derek Fisher is distraught, and he wants you to know how it pains him to see you in a light that he knows is not the real you.

Per Mark Berman of the New York Post:

"Lamar Odom was one of the greatest people I’ve ever known. That’s the way I see him. I don’t see him through the prism of choices he has made. I view him through the heart and soul of the person he really is. I’m obviously hoping he can pull through this, [and] in some fortunate way, this becomes the beginning of a different ending.Just everyone’s happiness and well-being was always more important to him. That he was always willing to sacrifice his own opportunities, minutes, shots, at times he sacrifices other things in life to do for everyone else. Sometimes it left him in last place. That’s the type of person he is."

There is so much more we can’t wait to say to you.

For now, we pray you pull through this horrible low in your life and have another chance to actualize the blessings you spoke about in your speech.
