The Los Angeles Lakers are saving their salary cap space for 2018 free agency in an effort to sign a max player or two, and one of their intended targets showed up to watch the team’s latest star.

LeBron James showed up at Summer League to watch the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Sixers in what could be seen as a scouting session for James. Once the Cleveland Cavaliers lost the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors in five games rumors began to swirl about LeBron’s impending departure from the Cavs.

One of the teams on his rumored destination list has been the Lakers. James owns a house in Los Angeles, has many business ventures there (including Hollywood) and his wife, Savannah James, is also rumored to want to live in L.A. full-time. The connections James has to Los Angeles makes it a viable option for him in 2018.

The rumors of LeBron leaving Cleveland aren’t only due to the Cavaliers’ quick exit from the Finals this year, but because of turmoil within Cleveland’s organization. Right before the draft and free agency, the team split with General Manager David Griffin who James had the utmost respect for.

Now that the Cavaliers have no GM, have parted ways with one James liked without consulting him and appear no closer to competing with the Golden State Warriors, many believe LeBron’s second exit from the Cavaliers is inevitable.

Although nothing is set in stone and James probably does not know what he plans to do next summer just yet, sighting him at a Lakers Summer League game where he got an up-close view of Lonzo Ball certainly raises eyeballs. Was LeBron merely there to enjoy a game from some of the NBA’s young and hopeful talent, or was he there to watch Lonzo live and scout a potential future teammate.

Only James knows the answer to that question but Ball had his best game so far in Summer League with LeBron in attendance and although James left at halftime, he got a front row seat to the future of the Lakers passing clinic.
