He might have a new name but his goals remain the same. Back when folks were still referring to him as Ron Artest he made headlines by auctioning off his championship ring to raise money for mental health awareness. Now that he’s Metta World Peace he’s already living up to his name by following through on a promise made over a year ago.
Metta was on the front page for his fast exit from Dancing With The Stars but it’s on the back page where you’ll find the real reason to sing his praises.
This week World Peace donated close to $300,000 to various charities with the funds raised from his auction. Metta’s goal is to give away another $500,000. Through his Xcel University charity, Metta made good on his promise by donating to organizations in different states including his native New York, former professional stomping ground of Indiana and even sent funds the way of Ohio and Arkansas.
Say what you will of Metta’s antics but the dude is all heart. So many athletes have used their social standing to make contributions to various organizations but few have made the type of sacrifice World Peace has for his cause. Hopefully the Lakers and Metta can do something about helping him get another ring. But we’d need an NBA season first for that to happen.
