It’s hardly the type of trade rumor that is going to reignite any title talks in Lakertown. The ship of champions sailed long ago with the Lakers sitting on the dock of the Bay. However there are rumblings of the Lake Show making moves as the NBA trade deadline approaches.
Apparently Mitch Kupchak has expressed some interest in acquiring Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham a 6’8” swingman that would be another Mike D’Antoni type of talent.
A former second round pick of the Portland Trailblazers, Cunningham was a big part of Villanova’s run to the Final Four back in ’08. This season has been the most productive of his pro career as he’s seen considerable court time due to injuries in Minnesota.
Of course the Lakers and Wolves have been rumored to be trade partners for the last two years however those talks have revolved around Pau Gasol and Derrick Williams. No telling if the report on Cunningham is only the tip of the iceberg in a potential blockbuster deal.
But if we’re to believe this is only about Cunningham and nothing else then you’ve got to wonder what the real motivation is. Sure, the Lakers would get a little more depth and versatility but overall this wouldn’t do much of anything to improve the team.
This is likely one of many more rumors to come as we near the critical point of this lost season in Los Angeles.
