3. James Worthy 1st overall, 1982 draft

2. Magic Johnson 1st overall, 1979 draft

Much like Baylor and West, Worthy and Magic were two of the biggest parts of the Showtime Lakers’ dominance through the 80s. While Abdul-Jabbar certainly played a big role on the team, it was Magic and Worthy who would help create the Showtime persona with their run and gun style and ability to get to the hoop.

Magic was draft out of Michigan State following their impressive run to the NBA title. He made an immediate impact, winning the title in his first season and taking the MVP honors following his historic Game 6 performance against the 76ers in the NBA Finals.

After winning another title in 1982, the Lakers found themselves sitting atop the draft as well following a trade during the 1979-80 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the pick, the Lakers drafted James Worthy and set their franchise up for a decade of success. Three titles and a Finals MVP later and Worthy had earned himself a part in Lakers lore. Eventually, both would have their numbers rightfully retired and left hanging in the rafters.
