In high school Xavier Henry was often referred to as the “Next Kobe Bryant”. While he isn’t that or even close, he’s a tough minded competitor and hard worker, cut from Bryant’s same cloth. At age 22, the Lakers may have landed upon a hidden gem that will continue to improve. Henry was a camp invite and immediately surprised with his skill, athleticism and tenacity.  A lottery pick that fell out of favor in two previous stops, Henry was at risk of playing his way out of the NBA.

No longer.

Henry has shown a steady mid range jump shot and three point shooting ability, he’s effective attacking the basket, and rebounds and defends well. He’s averaging 9.2 points a game in just 19 minutes of playing time. His free throw shooting is abysmal for a wing player (58.1%) and its his most glaring weakness. He could also be a more willing passer. Considering his age and his contract, the Lakers struck gold.
