4. We can’t afford to tank in 2014

The uniqueness of this season was that the Lakers could tank because they had a draft pick in the first round. They’ll directly benefit from their own struggles. The idea that the Lakers would make another one-year stop-gap team is nonsense. In 2015, the Lakers’ first-round pick belongs to the Phoenix Suns, save for it being a top five pick. I find it hard to believe the Lakers would risk struggling through the season only for a CHANCE at getting either a draft pick and/or a free agent.

On top of that, this is the Lakers. There’s enough debate this season alone about the Lakers tanking and whether such a storied franchise should commit to tanking. Imagine if we went through another season of the same? Imagine the backlash. And it’d all be valid complaints. This isn’t the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Lakers will be back next season
