5 Decisions Lakers Still Need To Make This Off-Season
By Jacob Rude
5. Who is the next Lakers head coach?
Let’s be honest: no one has a clue as to who the next Lakers coach will be. Byron Scott seems to be the favorite, but it feels like a forced candidacy. While he’s gotten three interviews, the fact he doesn’t have a job offer either is a better sign than anything.
The problems is, no other candidates have emerged. While names like George Karl and Mike Dunleavy have been floated around, neither have gained any sort of steam. If the Lakers want experience, these two with Scott would top the list. However, given the state of the roster, it may not be the best to bring in a veteran who likely would be looking for more of a win-now scenario.
What would make more sense is bringing in a risky hire. With nothing much to lose next season, bringing in a coach out of the college ranks (like Brad Stevens) or a high-level assistant would make more sense. However, given the complete lack of rumors outside of Byron Scott, any name thrown out is a complete guess.
PREDICTION: Just throwing a name against the wall, but someone like Billy Donovan would make sense. Young, risky, but qualified to make the leap to NBA.
