Predicting the 2016 Rio Olympics Team USA squad
By Jacob Rude
Point Guards – Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving
Leading off with the point guards, we have quite the crop of talent. The only likely question mark here is Paul. However, America’s deepest position is likely point guard. Steph Curry, Derrick Rose, John Wall, and Damian Lillard all would MISS the cut for this squad, showing how many great point guards there are in the league.
We know Paul’s ability to lead is unparalleled by a point guard in today’s game. It was he who played general in the 2012 Olympics and was apart of the 2008 team. Westbrook’s athleticism is too much for any international player to handle. We saw it in flashes in 2012. At this point, he’ll be in his absolute prime and could destroy teams.
Lastly is Kyrie Irving, who walked away with the MVP of the FIBA World Cup after one of the best shooting performances you’ll see in an international contest in the finals. We know Coach K has liked to use multiple point guards on the floor at once, and this crop could all play off-ball as well as on-ball.
