3rd String – Carlos Boozer, 20 minutes

The Lakers have a gluttony of forwards, and that’s even without Julius Randle this year (take a moment to cry now). The team is somewhat using their young talent by playing Kelly and Sacre, but they’re using the wrong talent. They’re starting forward needs to be Tarik Black, who has impressed since being claimed off waivers earlier this season. While his recent ankle injury has set him back, once healthy, he needs a big role.

After him, the Lakers can start properly using Kelly as a stretch four. All we’ve learned in his recent venture as a small forward is that, in a big pinch, he could play there. But in terms of starting or even regular rotation minutes, Kelly should not be seeing minutes at anywhere but the power forward spot this year. His range can stretch the floor, which as I’ve said before, is great for players like Clarkson and Lin who thrive at getting to the rim.

Lastly is Boozer, who realistically should be bought out (if possible). While his play level has been solid, he is blocking the development of players like Kelly, Black, Ed Davis, and even Robert Sacre. Boozer is definitely productive, and that pretty much goes against what the Lakers want right now. Cut him loose and let a contender pick him up.
