By the age of 31, ‘Mr Clutch’ was no stranger to the All-Star game, and in the midst of one of his career’s finest seasons, West shone bright at the Spectrum.
Jerry had been selected to the western conference roster for the previous nine years, and with fellow superstar Elgin Baylor by his side, the two were familiar company heading into the main event.
Despite victory for the East and the prestigious MVP award continuing to allude West, his performance was as resolute as ever: composed, authoritative and efficient. He lead the West’s backcourt in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals, and did so with a grace that included a masterful shaming of Walt Frazier, an all-defensive first team member just one year ago.
He owned the ‘60s, and kick-started the ‘70s in style.
