5. Accelerated Rebuild
Pippen Ain't Easy
Right now, the Lakers’ rebuild is stuck at the early stages. With Julius Randle out this season, the Lakers are left with developing Jordan Clarkson, Ryan Kelly, and Tarik Black, three prospects that aren’t likely to become superstars. Even with the possibility of Randle and a top-five pick coming this June, the Lakers are multiple years away from even competing for a playoff spot.
Bringing in Dragic accelerates that rebuild. Depending on the nature of the potential trade to bring him in, the Lakers could possibly retain their top five draft pick this summer, which would even further accelerate the rebuild.
Even without the potential top five pick, the Lakers would likely have Dragic-Randle-Clarkson-Young going into the summer of 2016 (i.e. the summer Bryant’s contract expires), which is a very solid base. That would include also another free agent this year as we discussed above, and going into a summer with Kevin Durant as a free agent target, among others, the Lakers would be in a great, great position.
