3.  Wesley Matthews – Shooting Guard

It will be very interesting to see how Matthews free agency shakes out.  But for his unfortunately timed Achilles tear, Matthews was set for a big pay day this summer.  That’s because he has career averages of approximately 45 and 40% on 2s and 3s respectively, and averaged almost 16 points per game this season as the clear third fiddle to Aldridge and Damian Lillard before getting hurt.  But he is more than just a spot up shooter, as he has also demonstrated the ability to post smaller players and score on the block.

Defensively, Matthews is extremely tough and hard nosed, taking pride in checking the other team’s top wing player and, usually, shutting them down.

But the question is, will Matthews be able to completely bounce back from his Achilles tear?  Some players have been able to do it, while others were never the same.  Despite the clear risk, the Lakers should take the gamble and try to pry him away from the Blazers this offseason.

In sum, while the Lakers will certainly try and land the big fish this offseason, they should also look to lock up role players that are so vital to winning championships.
