The Lakers lost 61 games this past season, so this fan base was thirsty for something positive to happen to the Lakers. This franchise is used to winning and with the number two pick, the Lakers can rebuild and get back on track.
July will also very important for the Lakers. That is when free agency begins and the Lakers will be looking to haul some talent to Los Angeles. Head coach Byron Scott was a guest on the Jim Rome Show and he believes the Lakers will look totally different from last year:
"“I think we can look totally different,” Scott said. “Julius [Randle] will be healthy and ready to go, we have three draft picks this year in the first two rounds, free agency is available, so we can have 7-8 new players on this team, so it can look totally different than it did last year.”"
Some of the players on the roster last season will not be back next year. The Lakers need to improve and they need some proven players that can come in and make an immediate impact.
The Lakers have plenty of cap space to hand out some hefty contracts and with the salary cap going up each of the next two seasons, they can afford to over pay for some free agents. Whether they want to play with Kobe Bryant or not, at the end of the day, money talks.
While the Lakers might not be a title contender next season, the infusion of new talent should give this city and organization hope.
