5 Players the Lakers Should Have Found a Way to Keep
By Hannah Kulik
3. Robert Horry
Here is a trivia question. Outside of the Boston Celtics of the 1960s, what NBA player has won more championships than anyone else? The answer is not Michael Jordan or Bryant. It is not Magic Johnson or Larry Bird. Nor is LeBron likely to earn the record. The answer is Robert Horry, who won seven championships in a 16 year NBA career. Three of those championships were with the Lakers, where he was a key role player. Horry made a habit of hitting key game-winning shots, and soon everyone was referring to him as “Big Shot Rob.” Fans will forever remember the exciting moments he provided during his stint with the team between 1997 and 2003.

Horry, and the rest of the roster, played poorly in the 2003 playoffs and the team was eliminated for the first time in four years before reaching the finals. Management gave up on him after that season when he became a free agent. It was reported that the Lakers made no effort to re-sign him. So he signed with the San Antonio Spurs instead where he continued his clutch shooting and was a major contributor on two more championship teams.
Horry is another player who should have finished his career as a Laker. He will forever be considered a Laker by the fans, though he played less than half his career for the team.
