Strength: Rim Protection and Defensive Awareness

One of the most impressive aspects of Ivica Zubac’ play in Las Vegas was his ability to block and contest shots at the rim. He averaged 2.6 blocks per game during his five summer league games, capping off his stay with a six block performance against the Utah Jazz.

His length is a huge asset in this regard, as the big man stands 7’1″ and sports a 7’4″ wingspan. This allows him to block shots while remaining vertical, and gives him a wide radius in which he can contest shots.

However, Zubac proved in Summer League that he is not only reliant on his length directly at the rim, as the young center flashed impressive mobility, rotating quickly and even turning his body to block players from behind. His aforementioned activity level proved to be key to his defensive performance, as he was willing and able to step out and contest jump-shooters beyond the free-throw line.

As the Lakers grow into a competitive team, they will need a player who can shut down the rim on a nightly basis. While this was not considered one of Zubac’ strengths heading into the draft, in Summer League he flashed the potential to grow into a reliable and intimidating presence at the rim.
