The Miami Heat had an outstanding second half of the season. They fell just short of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference as they proved again that they have a winning culture. Even with Dwyane Wade leaving as a free agent and Chris Bosh not playing all season the Heat persevered. With the Bosh situation now resolved, the Heat need to begin reloading their front court and John Collins will be the first piece.
Collins exploded as a sophomore. His production improved across the board exponentially. He averaged only 26.6 minutes per game but put up huge numbers in that time. He averaged 19.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Collins has a knack for scoring the ball and can do it in a number of ways.
He already possesses an above average mid-range game to go along with a good post game. The real question with him is if he will be able to stretch the floor in the NBA. He attempted only one three-pointer at Wake Forest, so work will have to be done in that area.
Defensively he can already hold his own. He is an excellent motor, both attributes which are helped by his continuous motor. You won’t have to worry about motivating Collins or him taking plays off.
The Heat will have to work on expanding Collins’ range and help him figure things out at the foul line. Those are the two biggest obstacles holding him back and are correctable. Miami would be an excellent fit for the productive big man.
