The Timberwolves are selecting 16th thanks to a trade with the Chicago Bulls. The Timberwolves acquired Jimmy Butler from the Bulls along with the 16th pick in exchange for Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, and the seventh pick, Lauri Markkanen.
The trade is a big win for the Timberwolves, as Butler could help put them over the top. Acquiring the 16th pick along with the best player in the deal makes this a true heist for Minnesota, who turned the pick into Creighton’s Justin Patton.
Patton is a raw prospect, but there is a lot to like. He will have time to develop as the Timberwolves already have an all-world center in Karl-Anthony Towns. At the beginning, Patton will be afforded the chance to grow at his own pace behind Towns. Once he develops, the two could be a dynamic pairing in the frontcourt together.
Patton is an extremely efficient offensive player. He has a soft touch around the rim and showed that he has the skills to develop a jump shot as well. He has work to do at the foul line but looks capable of fixing his woes there.
Once he adds some strength he will become even better in the low post. The added strength and size will also help him in the paint, where he is a bit underwhelming given his length and athleticism.
The Timberwolves were a great landing spot for Patton, who will learn from a great head coach in Tom Thibodeau and have time to develop. This move was a great one for the Timberwolves on all fronts.
