The Orlando Magic are under new management led by general manager, John Hammond. Hammond is from the Milwaukee Bucks, where they love their length. In his first draft with the Magic, Hammond stuck to that strategy, selecting the lanky Jonathan Isaac out of Florida State.
Isaac has one of the highest ceilings in this year’s draft class. He stands 6-feet-11 inches tall with a 7-feet-1 inch wingspan and has the tools to become a monster on both ends of the court. He is already a strong defender both on the perimeter and at the rim.
Offensively he has some growing to do. He has range to three-point line but needs to continue developing consistency with his jumper. Isaac also needs to add some strength and muscle to his frame. If he is able to do that, he could even play some center in today’s NBA dominated by small ball and perimeter play.
Isaac is athletic enough that he could defend all five positions. He is a versatile player that the Magic should really enjoy having on the roster. The only problem is that they already have a number of combo forwards, headlined by Aaron Gordon and Mario Hezonja. Can Isaac carve out a role for himself right off the bat?
