With the ninth overall pick, the Dallas Mavericks got a player that they really like in Dennis Smith. In his workouts, Smith really impressed scouts with his leaping ability and athleticism.
After years of success, the Dallas Mavericks were in uncommon territory with a top 10 pick. However, they made a good decision to draft Smith. With Dirk Nowitzki getting older, the Mavericks know his time his winding down.
At N.C. State, Smith averaged 18.1 points, 6.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. Considering Smith is listed at 6’2”, him averaging nearly five rebounds per game is extremely impressive.
Smith was a very good scorer in college, but he still has some room to improve. If Smith can develop his jump shot in the NBA, he will be very difficult to guard. Adding Smith gives the Mavericks a new piece to their young core that already includes Harrison Barnes and Nerlens Noel. While they might not be stars, the Mavericks do have the makings of an athletic young core.
Even though drafting Smith likely won’t result in the Mavericks making the playoffs next season, he will help them for years to come. As arguably the best athlete in te draft, Smith has a huge upside.
