Los Angeles Lakers: Four reasons drafting Lonzo Ball was right move
3. Ball could lure big name free agents to Los Angeles
New General Manager Rob Pelinka and President of Basketball Operation Magic Johnson have made it clear they want to sign big name free agents in 2018. The question for awhile was why would any big names want to come to such a bad Lakers team? Well, we now have our answer, and his name is Lonzo Ball.
So far in free agency, we have already heard about a number of talented free agents interested in coming to the Lakers. This has become possible because of Ball. Players want to play alongside him or give him tips as a possible mentor.
While the Lakers haven’t signed anyone yet the fact that players like Jamal Crawford have made it known that they want to come play with Ball is a good sign for the future, especially with all the cap space available next summer.
Lonzo has already jokingly tried recruiting LeBron James around the idea that whenever he wants the ball, Ball will get it to him. The idea of playing with a pass-first point guard like Ball should make coming to Los Angeles more enticing for free agency.
A sales pitch led by Ball and Magic is a lot more attractive than anything the Lakers have had the past couple seasons. If the team has a successful regular season without a big name it’ll only become more attractive. LaVar Ball has guaranteed the Lakers making the playoffs, and that next step could be vital in securing an All-Star in free agency like Paul George.
