Player Experience and League Familiarity
Luke Walton knows what the National Basketball Association is. Walton won two championships as a Laker from 2009-10 under the leadership of Kobe Bryant. He learned much about the game of basketball under Steve Kerr. The Warriors head coach spoke highly of his close friend:
"It’s tough. There’s lots of great basketball coaches out there, and we’ll find one, we’ll find someone who’s gonna do a great job, but when you’re talking about a close friend…"
Walton has managed to keep games competitive, especially against Golden State. Knowing how the Warriors play with their high ball movement envelops a young team to play with the intensity of four superstars.
Luke has been under much stress, but that’s the life of a head coach. This is what he signed up for. Walton stresses defense over everything else. As a player, scoring always helps. Holding an opponent down to a low amount of points also contributes.
Walton also, literally, knows basically everyone in the league. Former teammates such as Trevor Ariza still dominate on the sidelines (including Luke telling an f— you after the Rockets game). Fortunately, knowing the front office and much of the league gives the Lakers an advantage every night they compete.
