Team Improving Without Lonzo Ball

Rookie point guard Lonzo Ball hasn’t shot the ball well, but he still has a big impact on the team. His ability to run the offense is irreplaceable. While not regarded as a strong defender, the team is much better on defense when he is on the court.

This was evident whenever he was not playing. The Lakers lost the first eight games that Ball missed because of a shoulder ailment and then the left knee strain he is currently dealing with. They looked lost without their point guard, as the offense was a mess and the defense was nonexistent.

Ball has missed the past 10 games with the knee sprain, and things were ugly at first. However, the Lakers picked up a victory over the Boston Celtics and look like they are figuring things out without their point guard.

After losing the first eight games without Ball, the Lakers have won six of their next eight games without Ball. Walton is beginning to figure out a rotation to use without Ball, and things are falling into place.

Learning to play without Ball is important for the Lakers. Once he does return, they will experience a boost. However, when he needs a rest, there shouldn’t be as much of a drop-off. They have experience playing without him and are finally finding some success without their top pick on the court.

Ball could return this week from his injury, as the Lakers play next against the Phoenix Suns on February 6th. If he doesn’t return for the game, the Lakers at least know they can play well without him.
