2. Shelvin Mack
The Lakers have been hit hard by injuries at the point guard spot. Rajon Rondo has played only 20 games this season because of a suspension and multiple hand injuries. Lonzo Ball is currently sidelined with a Grade 3 ankle sprain, which will keep him sidelined 4-6 total weeks. Thus far, he’s missed seven games and counting.
Finding some depth at the point guard spot would be smart for Los Angeles. They need insurance in case Ball’s injury takes longer than anticipated, or Rondo suffers another injury. Luckily, the Lakers are in luck, as a very serviceable point guard in Shelvin Mack has hit free agency via a buyout.
Mack spent this season backing up Mike Conley on the Memphis Grizzlies. However, he was traded at the deadline to the Atlanta Hawks, who subsequently will waive him.
Mack is averaging 7.9 points, 3.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 22.7 minutes per game. He is shooting 35.9 percent from the 3-point line, which is a career-high for a season.
Mack also has some playoff experience, playing in 30 postseason games in his career. With a team that’s as young as the Lakers, having another player with postseason experience can’t hurt. Mack would make for a great third point guard on the depth chart and would be an upgrade over Alex Caruso.
