Los Angeles Lakers: Predicting where top stars will land this summer
By Ed Schrenzel
3. Kawhi Leonard – Player option for 2019-20
Although he’s one of the finest all-around players in the NBA, few stars avoid the bright lights as much as Leonard does. He rarely comments on anything publicly, especially about his future.
When Toronto traded for him, they obviously hoped they’ll be able to re-sign him this summer. But it’s extremely difficult to try to guess what Kawhi might do.
Prior to his trade to the Raptors, his agent and advisors said that he wanted to return to roots in Southern California, where he attended high school in Moreno Valley and college in San Diego. That led some fans and media to believe he wanted to join the Lakers, while others thought the Clippers were a better fit for him.
If he chooses not to re-sign in Toronto, Kawhi will be in great demand. His prospective free agency will test both Durant’s proclamation about James and Magic’s ability to close a basketball deal.
Prediction: Leonard is probably the most difficult player on this list to project. The Raptors likely have a decent chance of keeping him. It’s just as possible he’ll sign elsewhere with any number of teams. It won’t be easy for the Lakers to nab him, but he probably represents Magic’s best opportunity.
