4. Johnathan Williams
The Los Angeles Lakers have done an excellent job of unearthing talent during the draft process. Whether it is in the lottery, late first round or second round, they find contributors. This year, they look to have found help on the undrafted free agent market in Johnathan Williams.
Williams played with the Lakers during the Las Vegas Summer League, showcasing the same energy and efficiency around the basket he showed with the Gonzaga Bulldogs in college. He signed a two-way deal but saw minutes early in the season when injuries arose. Williams should be ready to receive consistent minutes once again.
When given a chance to play early in the season, prior to Tyson Chandler being signed, Williams showcased strong rebounding ability and soft touch around the basket. That continued in the G League, where Williams made 54.6 percent of his shots, averaging 15.2 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds.
In the last game against the Boston Celtics, Williams had the best game of his young career in the NBA. He scored 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds, one assist and one block.
Given the current state of the team, Williams should be receiving consistent minutes the rest of the season. Williams was making a case to be with the team earlier in the season, so this is a long time coming. This will be an audition to upgrade from a two-way deal to a guaranteed NBA deal this offseason.
