1. Injuries

It is easy to blame injuries as the number one problem for the Lakers this season, but they were supposed to be one of the deeper teams in league heading into the season to negate that. Yet, this team was never built to be a playoff contender if they sustained injuries, and perhaps no team was hit harder by the injury bug this season than the Lakers because nearly every important player missed time due to injury.

The biggest injury that occurred during the Lakers season was on Christmas night against the Warriors when the Lakers were the four seed in the West and looking like a playoff team. LeBron’s groin popped and it was the worst injury of his rock solid and durable career. It almost was like the movie Friday Night Lights, when the star running back Boobie Miles has a gruesome injury in a massive blowout at the end of the game, and the whole stadium sat there in utter disbelief and fear.

Not to mention pretty much the entire young core was hit by injuries as well, with Lonzo, Ingram, Kuzma, and Hart missing a combined 92 games this season. There was no way they were going to fight through that to have success.

From that group the two with the biggest injury concerns moving forward has to be Ball and Ingram, who are the two former number two overall picks. Ball has been chronically injured in a variety of ways all throughout his young career, and he will look to play his first full season next year.

Ingram is perhaps the scariest situation because he has a similar issue that forced former All-Star big man Chris Bosh to retire. He developed a deep venous thrombosis (DVT), diagnosis that kept him out of the end of the season. A DVT is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein anywhere in the body and it can have major negative consequences if not treated right away.

With a full roster, the Lakers were expected to be a border line playoff team, and with LeBron missing 27 games this season it was nearly impossible for them to outperform expectations this season. Before this year he had never missed more than 20 games, and his health has to be one of the biggest areas of concern for the entire city of Los Angeles to monitor.
