The Lakers might be a bit of a mess lately, but there is no denying that they are set up to have a big summer. When Magic Johnson took over as president of basketball operations, his goal was clearly to make some big splashes in free agency.
Last summer, the Lakers were able to accomplish step one of that by signing LeBron James. Now, the Lakers need to get one more star to join forces with James. The Lakers will have the cap space necessary to get another star, but hopefully their dysfunction of late won’t scare free agents away.
In addition to the cap space, the Lakers also caught a huge break in the NBA Lottery. Los Angeles was able to win the 4th pick in the NBA Draft, which could result in another great piece for the young core, or it could be used as trade bait.

No matter what the Lakers do with the 4th pick, it should help the team for next season. With the ability to sign a max player and draft a Top 5 player, the Lakers could have a great offseason. While Johnson might not have seen his plan through of making the Lakers a title contender, the pieces are still there to make this a very good team with a strong summer. If things go right, Vogel might have a great team to coach.
