5. The era of the “superteam” may be over

With the tragic injuries to Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson during the NBA Finals that may keep them out of the entire 2019-20 season, no one may need three elite-level talents to win it all for the foreseeable future. With Durant out, the Toronto Raptors, who have just one superstar, won their first ever world championship, even though Thompson played for most of the series (and played really well).

For the past decade or so, since Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined Paul Pierce in Boston, superteams have been the cool thing in the NBA.

But with the apparent end of the Warriors’ championship run, and the realities of the NBA’s salary cap, it looks like it’s time to rethink the blueprint to the modern championship team.

Using the Lakers’ finite salary cap space on solid complementary players rather than another elite player sounds like the way to go. This way, they can have quality players coming off the bench that can hurt you, a la Serge Ibaka and Fred VanVleet for the Raptors.

If those guys are a smart mix of young guys and salty vets, the Lakers could set themselves up for an epic two or three year run with LeBron, AD and Kuzma.
