4. He’s a very good defensive player
Although the Lakers played very well on the defensive end during the first half of the season, they performed badly at that end the second half of the 2018-19 campaign. They still ranked 12th in defensive rating for the year, but it’s a very misleading stat.
Even more, the Lakers lacked a strong wing defender. Lance Stephenson had a solid season offensively, but simply wasn’t the defensive force he was five years earlier in Indiana. Brandon Ingram has the tools to become a premier defender, but he isn’t really there yet.
At 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, Green not only has the skills and talent to play high-level defense, he also has enough size to guard some 3s.
Getting through the Western Conference will mean getting through guys like Leonard, Paul George, James Harden, Klay Thompson (if he’s healthy come playoff time) and to a lesser extent Donovan Mitchell and DeMar DeRozan. Green can help contain these guys and make them work to get their numbers.
Those guys may still put up points, but Green can make them have to take more shots to get there.
