Point guard

2018-2019 PG Depth Chart: Lonzo Ball, Rajon Rondo, Alex Caruso, Isaac Bonga

2019-2020 PG Depth Chart: Rajon Rondo, Alex Caruso, Quinn Cook

The point guard will be the primary initiator of the offense and will call plays and set the table for the rest of the players on the floor. Last year’s rotation consisted of Lonzo Ball, Rajon Rondo, Alex Caruso, and very limited sightings of rookie Isaac Bonga.

This season, the Lakers brought back Rajon Rondo and signed Alex Caruso to a two-year extension. They also signed Golden State Warriors point guard Quinn Cook to a two-year deal as well. Starting point guard Lonzo Ball was part of the Anthony Davis trade, so he is no longer on the team.

With two of the three players still on the team, it’s difficult to compare the point guard rotation between this year and last year, but one thing for sure is that the defense will definitely take a hit with the departure of Lonzo Ball. However, what the team lost in defense at this position, they gained in terms of shooting, as Caruso and Cook are both above-average shooters.

On paper, this would appear to be a pretty thin point-guard rotation, but LeBron James will be commandeering a large chunk of the playmaking duties so the key skill the team needs at this position is reliable 3-point shooting to spread the floor, which Caruso and Cook will provide.

Rondo is the bigger question mark as his shooting is wildly bi-polar, but ideally, his minutes would be staggered with LeBron so that they share very little time on the court.
