Los Angeles Lakers: 2019-20 NBA season preview
Storyline No. 1: The center position
How Frank Vogel handles the center position will be something to keep an eye on throughout the season.
The Lakers looked to have things set when they signed DeMarcus Cousins and retained JaVale McGee. Cousins tore his ACL working out over the summer, leaving a huge void in the middle. Dwight Howard was signed to a non-guaranteed deal to help fill the hole left by Cousins.
Howard has not been great in recent years, as his poor attitude has not been great for locker rooms. However, he looked engaged during the preseason, which is encouraging.
The biggest question about the center position is how much Davis will play there. Davis has stated on numerous occasions that he wants to play power forward. It looked good during the preseason, but there will undoubtedly be situations that call for the Lakers going smaller. If they want to get their best players on the court at the same time, Davis will have to play some center.
A lineup of Avery Bradley, Danny Green, Kuzma, James and AD would be very difficult for opponents to stop. It should be something that the team should discuss with Davis to see if they could use it periodically during the season if the situation calls for it.
