4. PJ Washington
One of the young players the Los Angeles Lakers will get introduced to for the first time tonight is PJ Washington. The Hornets selected the Kentucky product with the No. 12 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Through the first two games of the season, he has been the Hornets’ best player.
Washington was unstoppable offensively in his debut, pouring in 27 points against the Bulls on an efficient 9-of-17 from the field. He made it rain from deep, knocking down 7-of-11 from distance as well. Against the Timberwolves, he recorded his first career double-double, scoring an efficient 10 points again to go with 10 rebounds.
In addition to the solid scoring numbers, Washington has recorded one steal and one block in each of his first two games as well. During his time at Kentucky, Washington showcased a versatile game and that has translated to the NBA thus far.
Given his size, as he stands 6’7” and weighs 236 pounds, he can play multiple positions in the frontcourt for the Hornets. He has already surpassed veteran Marvin Williams on the depth chart, as he looks to have locked down the starting power forward spot.
Tonight will be a great test for Washington. Los Angeles has veteran big men in JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard that know how to get it done on the defensive end of the court. His biggest test will come against Anthony Davis, who he could be matched up with, in the starting five.
