Fourth and third greatest teams in Los Angeles Lakers history:
Number four: 1949-1950 Minneapolis Lakers (8.25 SRS)
The second season in franchise history happens to be the fourth-best season as well. This Lakers team does not have some of the other big-names that are on the other top-five teams, but they did something the 1972-1973 team didn’t do: win the NBA Championship.
The second championship season in franchise history was led by Hall of Famer George Mikan, who undeservingly gets lost in the shuffle when modern-day fans talk about the greatest Lakers of all-time. Mikan was dominant for his time and led the Lakers to their first five championships, going 5-0 in the process.
Jim Pollard and Vern Mikkelsen were the only two other players to average in double-digit scoring. The 1949-1950 Minneapolis Lakers went 51-17 in the regular season and 11-2 in the playoffs en route to the Championship.
Number three: 1986-1987 Los Angeles Lakers (8.32 SRS)
This was the Showtime Lakers as their best. With former guard Pat Riley as the head coach, the Lakers went 65-17 and did so with some lesser-known players by the names of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy.
This team was stacked. Not only did they have one of the best trios of all-time but they also had a very solid supporting cast of Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, A.C. Green, Mychael Thompson and Kurt Rambis.
This team had the second-highest winning percentage in franchise history (up to this point) and dethroned the rivaled Boston Celtics in just one of many chapters between the two teams.
