Los Angeles Lakers’ potential trade target: Spencer Dinwiddie
Spencer Dinwiddie is really the only player that I could see being shopped by the Brooklyn Nets, despite his talent level and the fact that he is a key role player for the team off the bench. The reason for shopping Dinwiddie would be to get a long-term asset for a short-term one.
Dinwiddie has one more year under contract after this season before having a player option the following year. It appears as if Dinwiddie is going to opt out no matter what, especially considering that he started a GoFundMe to raise money from fans to decide where he would sign next.
The logic was simple, yet definitely outside the box. If the fans could raise enough money, Dinwiddie would take a minimum contract with the majority team of their choosing.
It flopped. Dinwiddie raised only $1,150 of his $24.6 million goal.
However, chances are that he will still opt out of his contract and if the price is right then it would not be surprising to see the Nets move on.
The only way this would work for the Lakers, though, is if they received approval from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and he agrees to opt into the last year of his contract in a sign-and-trade. That all depends on KCP, but after paying him favorably over the last few years, it should not be absurd to think that he could agree to this to play on a different contender.
The trade would then have to be something like KCP, Kyle Kuzma and maybe even the team’s first-round pick in this year’s draft. Personally, I would not like to see them trade it for Dinwiddie, but I also would not be shocked if that was the case.
Because of the Stepien rule, the Lakers would agree in principle to trade the selection, draft the player of the Nets’ choosing, then include that player in the trade.
