Hired a Coach

Almost immediately after Magic left the building, the Lakers and Luke Walton also parted ways. So Pelinka’s first task was to hire a new coach. But he quickly ran into trouble when he failed to sign either of his first two choices, Monty Williams or Tyronn Lue.

Maybe it was blind luck, but Pelinka seized the opportunity and expanded his search. He didn’t take long to interview and subsequently hire Frank Vogel, who has since proven without a doubt that he was the best choice for the team.

Not only has Vogel bonded with the two Lakers superstars and also with every player on the roster, but he’s also emphasized and helped improve the team’s defense and helped create outstanding team chemistry. The “one for all, all for one” attitude that the Lakers display should be the envy of every team in all sports.

Acquired a Superstar

Pelinka’s next move was renewing trade negotiations with New Orleans for Anthony Davis. The Lakers had been unable to reach an agreement at midseason, but once the season ended, the teams agreed on a package that sent three talented young Lakers along with their #4 pick in the draft and a bundle of future draft picks to the Pelicans.

Some have argued that Pelinka gave up too much or that he traded more than he needed to do. Nonetheless he deserves credit for acquiring one of the NBA’s best players while he is still in the prime of his career. AD has already combined with LeBron to give the Lakers the best duo in the league.
