Los Angeles Lakers: 3 guards to target in draft to replace current guards
By Jason Reed
3. Tre Jones, Duke
If the Los Angeles Lakers want to bring someone in that can come off the bench and be a court general with the second unit then Tre Jones is the prospect to select. Jones is coming off of a solid sophomore season with the Duke Blue Devils and he would be a steal for the Lakers with the 29th pick.
Jones averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 assists 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. He shot 42.3 percent from the floor and 36.1 from beyond the arc.
He is far from being a good shooter out of college, but he has proven that he is capable of shooting the basketball and it is something that can and will get better with time. He already made improvements from his freshman season to his sophomore season.
His bread and butter is as a facilitator. Jones was teh general of Duke’s offense and he thrives both in half-court sets and in transition. He has great court vision and a solid first step that allows him to get to the rim and create chances.
Defensively, he is even better than Dotson. He does not have the same explosiveness as Dotson but he is fantastic in picking apart passing lanes as well as being a solid on-ball perimeter defender. A defensive backcourt of Jones and Caruso would be really hard for opposing teams to get past.
He should be right in the Lakers’ range as well. ESPN ranks Jones 34th, NBADraft.net 44th and Tankathon 25th.
