Los Angeles Lakers: 4 Lessons from the first road loss of the season
By Ronald Agers
Dennis Schroder and Alex Caruso played outstanding and their big shots nearly saved the Los Angeles Lakers!
It is nice that two Lakers players in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso are ranked one and three in the NBA in 3 point shooting. Now that we have looked at the sunshine, now we have to sit in the rain. Both are now moving up on the scouting report and are not shooting as well.
Even though both hit huge 3 pointers late, KCP hit only one shot all night long. Alex Caruso on the other hand, played lights out in the Lakers’ furious comeback.
Alex Caruso:
Alex Caruso finished with a bench leading 10 points (4-7 shooting!), an offensive rebound, 2 assists and a steal. He led the team in plus/minus with a +8. However, he only got 16 minutes even though he was in the closing lineup. Even though Tobias Harris hit that buzzer-beater, Caruso defended him well.
Dennis Schroder:
Boy, the debates on this guy will be fierce around March when he’s eligible for his max extension. Why? His inconsistencies are maddening at times. Dennis Schroder was atrocious in the first half missing all five of his shots and not scoring a point. Then in the second half, he was huge scoring 8 points in both quarters to finish with 16 points.
His pick on Joel Embiid to free up Anthony Davis for the go-ahead layup before the Harris winner was huge and underrated.
R.I.P. Sekou Smith
This Lakers post-game is dedicated to Sekou Smith, an NBA journalist and analyst for NBATV. He lost a battle with COVID-19 at the age of 48. He leaves behind a wife and three children. Plenty of condolences and kind stories were all over social media.
Here’s mine.
When I started writing full-time a couple of seasons ago, I sent a Facebook friend request to him. He not only accepted it, but he also gave me tips on writing and how to move up in the sports business. He did not have to do that. In fact, the practice of answering every commenter with a thank you was because of him. His message was to appreciate your audience.
If you want to honor Sekou Smith, wear a mask and follow the protocols. This disease is real.
