Washington Wizards that the Los Angeles Lakers could trade for: 2. Isaac Bonga

Yesterday I published a piece about why I think the Los Angeles Lakers are destined to make some sort of small trade at some point this season. One of the compelling reasons for the Lakers to make a trade is the hole at the center position and the other smaller roster hole that the team has.

It is not significant and the team really does not have to address it, but there is never anything wrong with getting depth. That other hole is with the team’s wings. I do not love the Lakers’ bench wings and it is mostly because of the minutes that Kyle Kuzma is getting.

Isaac Bonga is not a better player than Kyle Kuzma but he is another body that can give the Lakers depth at the small forward position who has proven that he can be an average wing defender in the league. He has not been great this season, but he did post an average -0.1 Defensive Box Plus/Minus last year and a 2.2 DPBM with the Lakers (in a small sample size).

I definitely think that Isaac Bonga is a better option than Alfonzo McKinnie and that really is the trade that the two sides would make. The Wizards would flip Bonga for McKinnie and get a second-round pick in the process.

Bonga’s shot is coming around this season as well, albeit in limited attempts. Bonga is shooting 42.1% from beyond the arc with 1.6 threes attempted per game.

Bonga is still only 21 years old as well, so if the Lakers could flip McKinnie and hold onto Bonga this time and help him develop then it would be a huge win for the team.
