2. The Los Angeles Lakers are title favorites that may need more help with Anthony Davis’ injury

Anthony Davis has Achilles tendonitis that flared up yet again on Valentine’s Day against the Denver Nuggets. Davis had to leave the game early and will be reevaluated in 2-3 weeks as he has been diagnosed with a calf strain.

Davis should probably sit longer than that. Regular season games do not really matter in the grand scheme of things and the worst possible thing would be rushing Davis in any way and causing him to have a serious injury. Just look at Kevin Durant in the 2019 NBA Finals.

This means that AD might not get as much playing time in the regular season, adding the need for forward depth, making Blake Griffin more intriguing. Griffin is not even close to the player that AD is, but adding him to start at the four and allow Montrezl Harrell to continue coming off the bench could be good for the Lakers.

Plus, there is the potential of Griffin rediscovering some of his star potential in playing with LeBron James. This is far from a guarantee, but it could give the Lakers an emergency backup plan if Davis does ever suffer a more serious injury.

If AD was completely healthy then it would make more sense for the Lakers to pursue a center. With his recent injury, and the likeliness that Griffin is bought out, it feels like a necessary risk for the Lakers to take.

And for Griffin, signing with a team like the Los Angeles Lakers makes a lot of sense. He is already familiar with LA and the Lakers would give him a chance to contend for an NBA Championship.
