Los Angeles Lakers: 4 Lessons learned in sweep by the Clippers
By Ronald Agers
LeBron James is reported to be back next week for the Los Angeles Lakers postseason run. When? Anyone’s guess.
The bigger concern that shadows even the uncertain status of the Lakers play-in tournament status is LeBron James’ health and long-term effectiveness. The conversation of when LeBron could come back varied but it’s clear he came back to soon.
Now that James did not suit up against the Los Angeles Clippers and won’t in the second game of this back-to-back set against Portland on Friday, James is listed as “day-to-day.” (Aren’t we all?).
For the time being, Lakers Nation is back to foreshadowing (Also read…guessing!) when LeBron James will be back in the lineup.
If the team practices between Friday’s game against Portland and Sunday’s game against Phoenix, coupled with the three-game window between the Houston game on May 12 and New Orleans on May 15, maybe there are creative ways for LeBron to get ready.
The Lakers have a record of 9-13 without James this season. With James’ mini two-game return, the Lake Show are 0-2 with losses to two non-playoff teams in Toronto and Sacramento. After this Clippers game, things do not get any easier with playoff contenders in the coming week.
- Portland Trail Blazers on Friday: This is a must-win for the Lakers. A Portland loss gives the Blazers the season tiebreaker. This means the Lakers have to finish with a better record than Dallas and Portland to avoid the play-in tournament.
- Phoenix Suns on Sunday: The Suns are trying to obtain the number one seed in the Western Conference from the Utah Jazz. With a recent loss to Utah, Phoenix needs this game as badly as LA.
- New York Knicks on May 11: The Knicks are in a dogfight for the 4th seed and homecourt advantage in the first round with the Atlanta Hawks.
Frank Vogel continues to give the company line on the short-term goals regarding the monitoring of the injury via USA Today.
"“We want him back as soon as possible. But we want him back as healthy as possible,” Vogel said of James. “That’s the No. 1 goal. Wherever we end up in the standings, we want him as healthy as possible going into the playoffs. Other than that, we’re just going to compete and try to win as many games down the stretch here.”"
In other words…wait and see. LeBron will get back when he gets back.
